Welcome to all of you Young House Lovers! (That actually sounds pretty weird). But anyways, welcome to our blog and thanks for stopping by!
Nate and I were honored to have John, Sherry, Clara, and even Burger pop in for a House Crash. We were frightened to think that our little abode would disappoint, but have been amazed and humbled by the responses so far.
Please feel free to poke around our blog and ask any questions. I will do my best to answer them as quickly as possible.
And, if by some miracle you didn't happen upon us through YHL, check them out! http://www.younghouselove.com
Beautiful home!
ReplyDeleteSo cool! I would so love to have John, Sherry, Clara and Buger stop by. Love your home. The wine nook area is fabulous! I also love the entry flowing into the LR. Love the yellow accents. You guys did some amazing work.
ReplyDeleteWOW! Your house is amazing! Your story is actually pretty similar to ours (minus the awesome house part). My husband and I bought a house in Herndon a year and a half ago and are slowly working on it. How long have you guys been working on your house? I may have to pick your brain for recommended contractors in the area. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda! Welcome to Herndon! We actually moved into Herndon about 2 1/2 years ago and began gutting the house the 2nd weekend we moved in...literally. The kitchen cabinets were the first things to go.
DeleteAs far as contractors, we really didn't use any besides some stone masons. We did everything else ourselves, but feel free to ask, maybe we know someone :)
Your home is AMAZING!! A wonderful inspiration for anyone looking to make a big difference in their place!
ReplyDeleteSO glad I've found you... will definitely be poking around and following you guys too. Can't wait to see what else you can do!! :)
You have a beautiful home! I love it! I might "steal" a few ideas from you. So Lovely, thanks for sharing. Came over from YHL.
ReplyDeleteI just read the house crashing post on YHL and though I'd stop by your blog. Your house is BEAUTIFUL!
ReplyDeleteI saw you guys on YHL too! LOVE your home and your style! So inspiring!
ReplyDeleteYour house is so ridiculously cool! I am in awe of the sense of style and all the DIYness. Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous home! I hope we don't crash your servers. I'm your newest blog follower - so excited that John and Sherry crashed your house.
ReplyDeleteSarah
I saw your home today on YHL, and I think it is just beautiful!! So happy to have found your blog! :-)
ReplyDeleteHi! I saw your house on YHL, and just had to pop over here to tell you how much I love what you have done. It is stunning!
ReplyDeleteLove everything!!! Your style is fantastic! I'm off to pin a bunch of your pics!!
ReplyDeleteYour house is AMAZING! I usually just skim through the House Crashing posts, but yours caught my attention immediately. I'm so in love with everything! You guys have some TALENT!
ReplyDeleteWhen can I move in? ;)
Love your home! My husband and I are closing on our first home in Clifton on the 16th and your house gives me much hope and inspiration as we begin the home ownership adventure. Off to check out your blog now :)
ReplyDeletealliemurphy at yahoo dot com
This may just be a repeat of what everyone else has said but I LOVE your home! I saw the house crashing post on YHL and had to pop on over to your blog to leave a comment. I love your style, all the details, and obviously the heart you guys have poured into your home. I may have to read through your whole blog now! Great job!
ReplyDeleteYour house is gorgeous - I love it! Especially that tree trunk coffee table. I saw something, but much smaller on The Nester and have been buttering my husband up to make one ever since. Thanks for the tip about hollowing it out!!
ReplyDeleteYou have fantastic taste. I love the blend of modern and classic. I'm drooling over all the stone work in your front and back yard. What courage to remove that deck and start over. Also, the sunken yard in front make such an impact on the entire house/curb appeal. How satisfying it must be to use your training as landscape designers to create your own special place. Well done.
ReplyDeleteI found you though Young House Love today and I have to say, WOW! Your home is definitely my favorite that John & Sherry have crashed. I have read through all your posts now and do hope you'll start updating again (and more frequently) because you have truly brilliant taste and are incredibly talented!
ReplyDeleteQuestion -- in your stairwell, how did you finish off the ceiling? Is it treated with that wainscoting look? I'm thinking of stealing that idea, but wouldn't know where to end the wainscotting if it's on the ceiling as well. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWe left the ceiling as it was (drywall and ceiling paint). We ended the wainscoting on the wall adjacent to the ceiling with quarter round, but in hindsight I wish we had capped it all off with crown moulding against the ceiling. As the stairwell enters the upbeat airs hallway we just ended the quarter round with a mitre cut (like you would do on any outside corner). The same would apply with crown moulding.
DeleteThanks Michele. That is a helpful description.
DeleteI live in Herndon too and i'm so impressed! You guys did a great job.
ReplyDeletewhere are your favorite places in the area to shop for house stuff? I could really use some help with my master bedroom. When my husband and i moved into our townhouse 4 years ago our bedroom became a place to put things we did not have another place for, and it’s a hodgepodge of his old furniture and mine. I hate it.
We shop a lot at Home Depot, Crate and Barrel (when the money tree allows), and antique shops.
DeleteHi Michele! Can you recommend any antique shops? I live in Arlington and the few antique stores that I have been to in the area are awfully pricey, not the best places for finding a hidden gem in need of a little elbow grease.
DeleteI also found you through YHL, your house is gorgeous! congrats to you guys on your success! Looking forward to following your blog!
-Amanda
I like the antique shops out in Lucketts, VA (some of them can get pricey though). There is also a great little place in Leesburg. I think it is call Urban Pickers. If you go there, have lunch across the street at the Virginia Wine Kitchen (so yummy!)
DeleteLove your home! You guys have done some awesome work with a great sense of style.
ReplyDeleteAnother visitor via YHL - great space! Very inspiring that you did it all yourselves. Will now go poke around your other pages :)
ReplyDeleteI am in love with your home! (and have actually just spent the last two hours at work looking back through all of your posts!! shhh...don't tell the boss) This is definitely my favorite home that YHL has crashed. We are in the process of looking for a new house and you just gave me so many ideas, because I swear every house I look at is the equivalent of your "before" pictures.
ReplyDeleteCan I move in? Pretty please? I do laundry and make a mean hazelnut gelato! :) Seriously though, you both have made a beautiful home that you should be proud of. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteYou had me at hazelnut gelato! My favorite!!!
DeleteOK, secret's out... It's not actually my recipe but Giada's. Here you go, from my other blog, NewlyWife: http://www.newlywife.com/giada%E2%80%99s-hazelnut-gelato/
DeleteYour home is beautiful! One of John and Sherry's best crashes. I can't wait to go back through all your old posts. My favorite has got to be the tile wall in the bathroom. It gives that small bathroom some WOW. I also love the mirror with the big rivets or nail heads (whatever they are). Very rustic but pretty.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your home with us. Would you tell me what color you painted your master bedroom? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI keep going through the pictures, but I still can't decide what I love best! The stairwell with the cool fixture is AMAZING, but I also love the stone wall around the fireplace and the really cool treestump coffee table. Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI looked at the pics again.....I quess I was asking what color is the GUEST room! Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteBenjamin Moore Quite Moments
DeleteYour place is awesome. You guys just need to invest in a better camera! YHL shots of your house really show the beauty of it...:)
ReplyDeleteUgh, I know! Maybe a XMas gift from the hubby ;)
DeleteWOW! I have been a YHL follower for almost two years so have seen many 'house crashes' but I can honestly say this is my FAVOURITE of all time. Absolutely stunning - every bit of it. I don't even have a favourite part because I could never choose. You have created my dream house! Amazing. - new follower alert!
ReplyDeleteYour house is almost identical to one my grandparents used to live in. It was so cool to look at your layout and compare. You have done a fabulous job renovating. Your home is beautiful!! :) Wish you would blog some more now. ;)
ReplyDeleteHopefully this will motivate me to do so! Thank you for you sweet words and encouragement :)
DeleteWOW! I absolutely love your home! I am so glad YHL crashed your home and shared it! My husband and I are also newlyweds looking to buy in Northern Va. Your home is an inspiration!! I will definitely be following your blog to see your projects! :)
ReplyDeleteAMAZING!!! You both are truly talented. I wish you lived by me because I'm searching for a landscape architect to design our front, back and side yards (we live on a corner lot) and would definitely hire you on the spot. Not only are your outdoor spaces gorgeous, the inside is as well. I LOVE everything you have done and look forward to reading your past posts to see exactly how you got there. Thanks for opening your door to YHL.
ReplyDeleteFound you through YHL and HOORAY for that! Your home is amazing! Looking forward to wasting a few hours sifting through all of your awesome transformations with a hot cup of coffee this afternoon!
ReplyDeleteVisiting from YHL.. Amazing home! I'm super impressed. :)
ReplyDeleteWow! So glad you were featured on Young House Love! Your home is beautiful. I have to know about how you built your kitchen cabinets. Is there a tutorial? Your style and taste are amazing!
ReplyDeletehttp://theamenwithats.blogspot.com/2011/01/lets-build-some-cabinets.html
DeleteI have to work on getting an Archive page because all of our posts are not showing up! Thanks for asking :)
Love your home, love your style (even more than I love the Youngsters' style, but don't tell them I said that!)!
ReplyDeleteI'm off to scour your site for more pictures of your refurbished guest room dressers, believe it or not. Replacing drawers with baskets is really sharp, I need some details!
Still a post that I need to write, but hopefully this is my motivation! Thanks for you sweet words :)
DeleteYour home is absolutely gorgeous! Oh, to be young and have your talent.
ReplyDeleteYour house is stunning! I'm following now...can't wait to see more! :)
ReplyDeleteAWE.SOME. HOUSE! so inspiring. it's amazing how much you DIY'd!! and just finding your blog for the first time and love your writing style ;) yeay to new blog followers!
ReplyDeletei really love your backsplash in the kitchen do you have the exact source for it?
ReplyDeletethanks!
http://theamenwithats.blogspot.com/2011/01/lets-get-some-countertops-and.html
DeleteI don't have the exact source where I bought it but I found it at a company called Marble Systems.
Love love love your home improvements!!! That kitchen is positively inspiring. You have another blog follower. :)
ReplyDeletePopped over from YHL! Love everything, and I mean everything about your home. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI loveeeee your house. It so much my style :) Funny thing is we are redoing our kitchen an actually bought that exact back splash to put up. But question- What is the paint color in your kitchen? Because I will be running out tonight to paint my kitchen with it. Exactly what I was looking for :)
ReplyDeleteOf course it is the one color that I can not remember! It is a Dutch Boy paint color that I found and had color matched so unfortunately the Home Depot label on the paint color just says "Custom Match". I can give you the code from the top if that helps. Just let me know!
DeleteCame over from YHL as well. Fellow NOVA'er here - totally jealous! Your house is gorgeous. Might borrow some ideas for our own abode - appropriately tweaked to fit our house, of course. Great job!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful home! Love your work!
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get the rug in the dining room?
That was a great find at Ikea! Thank you for your kind words :)
ReplyDeleteI am so impressed by your beautiful home. This is my favourite YHL house crash to date! Great job!
ReplyDeleteYour home is really lovely! I also agree this might be one of my favorite house crashes yet! Also love that you are "right down the street" from me...I live in Ashburn.
ReplyDeleteYou have a very beautiful home.
ReplyDeleteYour home is exactly my taste! Cannot wait for more of your posts!
ReplyDeleteMichelle, where did you get the cedar mantle? I have a fireplace in my home needing one and want one exactly like yours. Is it one piece or assembled? Did you get it from the awesome tree guy or elsewhere? What are the dimensions of the mantel (not the length, as that varies, but the depth & width).
ReplyDeleteYour entire home is awesome!
We got it from a local lumber yard and it had been weathered for a while. It was a 6"x12" peice. I hope that this helps!!
DeleteThanks, it does!
DeleteI just love the pavers you chose for the backyard...and I think they will be perfect for the patio I hope to put in next spring. You said they are "Hanover" pavers but my searches are coming up dry. Where did you buy them? Do you have any additional manufacturer info you could tell me? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteTry www.hanoverpavers.com
DeleteIt was an absolute delight to discover your blog via YHL, I'm so inspired by what I've seen of your house on their blog post!! I've just started renovating my house, with pretty much zero previous experience, so I'm looking forward to browsing your blog and being even more inspired by your projects and renos :-)
ReplyDeleteLove your house / decorating style / gorgeous yards!!!! ........ We've been looking for a sectional as well and either they are too big or not very comfy at all!! Info on yours? Brand / style / fabric / maker / etc....... thanks!
ReplyDeleteWe had the same issue!
Deletehttp://theamenwithats.blogspot.com/2011/02/search-for-sectional.html?utm_source=BP_recent
I will have to pull the paperwork for the name and fabric color. I will let you know as soon as I locate the paperwork.
Wow, I am AMAZED by your beautiful home! Amazing work. Happy to have found your blog. We live in nearby Fairfax. :)
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to say how much I loved this peek into your house- very much the style we're going for in the house we moved into over the summer (in nearby Mount Vernon-area). Will definitely be stealing some ideas!
ReplyDeletePopping in from YHL. Congratulations on your Feature. I just had to tell you what a beautiful home you have!! I live in Virginia too...right in between DC and Richmond. :) Nice to "meet" you. :)
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you too! Thank you for popping in and hopefully you stick around :) I promise to be better at posting!!
DeleteI dont want to be a bother but if you could get the paint number for the kitchen color that would be fantastic. I really love it :)
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry, but I can't read the label on the can anymore.
DeleteSo beautiful!! I LOVE your taste and am in awe of your abilities!!!!!!!! Congrats on a gorgeous house! Will be following you (came over form YHL)!
ReplyDeleteStopped by after seeing your house on YHL...so many beautiful rooms!! I seriously want to pin all the rooms, haha. I love the living room, and family room, and kitchen. You guys have great taste!
ReplyDeleteChecked out your page after seeing it on YHL. I love the work you've done on your place. It has inspired my own decor. I'm thinking of using some of your ideas for our hall bathroom too. Beautiful work!

ReplyDeleteI "meet" your house at YHL blog. I wanted to compliment with you guys about the amazing job you have done. Your house is very lovely and I am jealous!
ReplyDeleteA side question: could I ask where you got the entrance console? The one made of iron and rustic wood? I am totally in love with it and it would look amazing with what I am doing in my entrance as well. :)
The console is from HomeGoods from about two years ago or so. Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteLove your blog and your house. I'm a Virginian as well...only living in Texas.

Your house? Seriously AHmazing!!! I am totally inspired. Ku-dos!
ReplyDeleteMeghan
Saw your house on YHL and love what you have done. My house is very similar to your house. Would you be willing to give me the dimensions of your rooms on the first floor minus the family room?
ReplyDeleteMarilyn
Hello! I absolutely LOVE your house!! Where did you get your entry way table with the fun lamp/lampshade? I need something similar.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Both are from Home Goods! I love that place :)
DeleteBeautiful and welcoming home! Love every single aspect! My favorite is the tiled accent wall in the powder room and the stone walls in the landscaping! :) Thank you for sharing with us!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful house! I love the treatment on the stairway. We have a 2 story foyer, I wonder how that treatment would work there... ummmm. Also, I am from Herndon, my parents still live there - if I ever see you in public I may have to say hi :-)
ReplyDeletePlease do! I will be the fat pregnant lady that is waddling :)
DeleteGorgeous work in your house! I just saw the house tour on YHL and, since you're a NOVA neighbor, I had to stop by and say "hi".
ReplyDeleteLOVING the updates in your home! It's the perfect mix of modern and cozy. I also found your home via YHL and so glad I did. I think I can speak for most of us, thinking of what ways to update our own homes, using your projects as somewhat of a guide :) I have a question about the paint colors -- is it possible for you to list all paint colors from your rooms? Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteMost of them are contained within the blog posts but here is a quick list: Den- Benjamin Moore Gunmetal Gray Trim work, doors, kitchen cabinets- Benjamin Moore Cloud White Powder Room- Behr Trail Print Guest Room- Benjamin Moore Quite Moments Guest Bathroom- Custom Mix of leftover colors I hope that this helps! I will need to do a page with the colors listed!
DeleteI was very impressed with what you have done with your home. You both are very talented. My sister and I had a great time looking at the before and afters and will be following your blog. You are amazingly talented!
